(10) What Is Genre?

Genre

The term genre means category or type which is useful when talking about film as it organises different films depending on what they are about and what generic similarities they have. By categorising films, it allows producers to make and market their film to audiences. It also helps the audience come to a decision about what type of film they would like to see.

Sub-genre

Sub-genre is a subcategory within a particular genre.

Hybrid Genre

A hybrid genre is also known as a cross genre and blends elements from two or more genres.

Codes and Conventions

Codes are systems of signs that create meaning. Codes can be divided into two categories - technical and symbolic. Technical codes are the ways in which equipment is used to tell the story in a media text. For example, using different camera shots can be a way to tell a story in media. Symbolic codes show us what is beneath the surface to what we see. For example, the character's actions can be a way of telling the audience how they are feeling.

Genre Tropes

Genre Tropes are conventional themes in a particular drama. In literature, a trope is a familiar and repeated symbol, theme, motif, style or thing that permeates a particular type of literature.

Comedy: Coming to America

I enjoy watching this particular movie because you get a sense of the character that the actor is playing and connect with them through the character's personality. I prefer this genre because it creates a positive tone throughout the entire movie and immediate engages me solely because of the character.

Thriller: The Stepfather

The Stepfather falls under the genre thriller and is evident because of its use of music to create suspense. The music makes the audience become wary and alert for possible danger. The editing is slow paced which allows the audience to be drawn in. I personally like this genre because of the suspense it creates and the shots that is incorporated within the movie. The sound effects also play a major part within the movie.
