Micro Analysis
The camera shots range from extreme close up to close up and the cuts are frequent and quick. The shots are straight forward and the main focus are the props and the actions of the character. There is a lot of super imposition which contains flickers of scribbles. The movement of the character within the frames are slow which creates suspense for the audience. The title opening involves: titles on a blank screen, which are black and white, which shows a high contrast. The font is handwritten which gives a sense of character to the audience and the credits and miss-en-scene is integrated well with the film. Super imposition is presented within the title sequence which is engaging for the audience. Lighting has a major role to play within this particular title sequence as the darkness in the frames give a sense of the tone throughout the rest of the movie and a strong sense of the main character. The props that are involved in the title sequence are mainly objects that are signs of psychotic behaviour such as a razor bandages and sharp scissors. The music adds a mysterious tone to the title sequence and engages the audience. The lyrics "closer to God" in the song relates to the storyline as it is about commiting sins.
Macro Analysis
The key plot introduced in the title sequence is based on crime and death conveyed from the dark and eerie atmosphere. The storyline is introduced with a character writing in a journal. His fingers are in bandages which brings the words pain to mind which is supported by the razor. The main character is introduced in a way where it creates curiosity because his face is not revealed to the audience. This means that the audience deduces his personality through his actions and hand gestures.
The title sequence begins with animation and involves block colours (red against black). This shows a high contrast. The animation is slow paced which shows that the aim of the movie is to build tension within the audience, exaggerate the emotions of the character and to focus to something in particular that is going on in the mise-en-scene. The music is slow but has a heavy base which adds tone to the title sequence and to set the pace of the film. This helps to distinguish what the genre of the movie is. The font of the credits are non traditional and in capital letters which suggests that the content of the movie is serious because it is bold and engages the audience immediately.
